Veolia Water Industrial Outsourcing provides sustainable solution for landfill leachate
Veolia Water Industrial Outsourcing (VWIO), a subsidiary of Veolia Water UK PLC has signed a 12 year variation to its existing contract for the leachate treatment plant at Veolia Environmental Services landfill site in Telford, UK.
VWIO specialises in the provision of bespoke solutions within the industrial water cycle utilising a Design, Build Own Operate and Maintain (DBOOM) approach.
Originally the solution provided for the removal of pesticides and thermal stripping of ammonia and methane for destruction in the biogas fuelled flare. The revised configuration caters for the conversion of biogas into electricity as a sustainable non-fossil energy for export from site, and derives heat from the generating engines to provide steam to distil the leachate and concentrate an ammoniacal solution for export as a further sustainable product.
This partnership provides Veolia Environmental Services with a disposal route for a difficult leachate allowing discharge to sewer having removed pesticides, ammonia and other non-condensable gases. This provides 750 tonnes per year of ammonia solution for re-use in water treatment and chemical industries whilst generating 2MW of power for sale into the National Grid.
Veolia Environmental Services is a world leader in waste management serving almost half a million industrial and tertiary customers in 35 countries.
Veolia Environmental Services is the UK's leading waste management company operating a network of landfill sites, materials recovery facilities, transfer stations, civic amenity sites, energy recovery facilities and compost sites.

VWIO has signed a 10-year outsourcing contract with the MoD Gibraltar
VWIO has signed a 10-year contract with the Ministry of Defence's naval base in Gibraltar to design, own and operate a seawater RO plant with a capacity of 1,400 m3/day, built by Vivendi Water Systems. The plant will satisfy the naval base water requirements including personnel and visiting ships.
For reasons of security the base utilities infrastructure is separate from the rest of Gibraltar, particularly the water supply which not only sustains the naval facility on an ongoing basis but also services visiting ships at any given time. The base also exports a certain quantity of water to the civilian population. In addition there is also a requirement for high water demand at short notice to service the fleet. Security and quality of supply are therefore of paramount importance to the base. This is why the MoD chose VWIO as their supplier of choice, as we were able to demonstrate an understanding of the facility, its geography and the technology required to deliver a sustainable water supply.
Since energy is very expensive in Gibraltar, a primary driver for the design of the plant was energy efficiency. The installation will be equipped with the latest energy recovery system, using a pressure exchanger, increasing the recovered energy by 30% from the previous plant. Energy recovery will have a significant impact on reducing the cost of water produced.
“This project is of significant importance to VWIO and the group as it enhances our position in the area of potable water production from a seawater source”
, Greg Turner, Technical Director
In addition, VWIO has become a registered supplier with the Ministry of Defence for future contracts.
