Food & Beverage

As water is one of the key ingredients to their product, the Food and Beverage sector requires process water of highest quality for health and food safety reasons. There are however, excellent opportunities for using recovered water in ancillary processes.

The water cycle in this market sector is centred on the disposal of strong COD/BOD waste streams produced as by-products of Food and Beverage manufacture.

VWIO uses proprietary technology based upon anaerobic/aerobic digesters and membrane bio-reactors to install systems to substantially reduce the biological load. The final product water abstracted from the bio-reactor by an ultrafiltration membrane can be recycled as a bacteria and virus-free water source within the plant. The technology used by VWIO also decreases sludge levels by 20% up to 30% of those normally anticipated.

Recycled water is not normally used in the product. However there are numerous outlets for recycled water within utilities (cooling towers, boiler feed) as well as Cleaning-In-Place (CIP) process. One of our innovations is to solve waste caustic CIP solutions disposal by removing contamination from the caustic waste using a membrane to derive a clean solution for reuse.

There is also more and more legislative pressure in the Food and Beverage Industry to conserve water through the resource efficiency issues in IPPC and through the need for time limited abstraction licence holders to demonstrate efficient use of their water resources.
